MCC recently added a variety of upper-level courses to help prepare you for exciting careers, including coursework in Biology, Calculus and Analytic Geometry, College Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Visit www.MACRAO.org to learn how these and other courses may meet requirements at other Michigan community colleges or universities. New courses include:

College Biology I (BIOL 121) provides an in-depth study of scientific method cellular structure, function and metabolism, cellular reproduction and genetics and the diversity of microorganisms.

College Biology II (BIOL 122) provides students with an in-depth introduction to fundamental areas of biology. Students are not required to take BIOL 121 before enrolling in this course. BIOL 122 emphasizes the scientific method, natural selection and evolutionary theory, investigation of the major eukaryotic kingdoms, basic anatomy and physiology of plants and animals, and ecological principles. Students will perform and report on an experiment of their own design.

Calculus and Analytic Geometry I (MATH 250) focuses on differential calculus. Topics included are limits, differentiation, continuity, differentiability, optimization and modeling. In addition, definite integrals and theorems involving definite integrals will be introduced. Numerous applications associated with some topics are also explored. Students experience these concepts using a problem solving approach with hands-on models and appropriate technology.

Calculus & Analytic Geometry II (MATH 251) focuses mainly on integral calculus. Topics included are techniques of integration, applications of the definite integral, improper integrals, sequences and series, approximating functions and differential equations. Numerous applications associated with some topics are also explored. Students experience these concepts using a problem solving approach with hands-on models and appropriate technology.

College Chemistry I (CHEM 220) focuses on the fundamental principles, laws and theories of general chemistry. N nomenclature, chemical reactions and solution stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, atomic structure, periodicity and chemical bonding are covered.

College Chemistry II (CHEM 221) is a continuation of CHEM220. It includes coursework in chemical bonding, liquids and solids, acid-base chemistry, solutions, chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and a brief survey of organic and biochemistry.

Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 251) provides an overview of organic chemistry, focusing on nomenclature, modern bonding theory, chemical reactions, reaction energetics, stereochemistry and nomenclature of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols and aromatics.

Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 252) focuses on ethers, carbonyl compounds, aldehydes and etones, carboxylate derivatives, conjugation, aromaticity, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. Laboratories focus on the multistepsynthesis of various organic compounds and their spectral analysis.

MCC Unveils Stanley P. Ash Building and Announces its Capital CampaignUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
10/31/2007 12:00 AM10/31/2007 11:59 PMYes7/1/2008 8:04 AMLisa HeraldYes
SIDNEY – Montcalm Community College unveiled its Stanley P. Ash Building for life sciences and announced its $2.5-million capital campaign during a ceremony Friday on its Sidney campus.

More than 100 guests celebrated the facility, which was named posthumously in honor of the longtime MCC supporter.

Thomas Kohn, president of MCC’s Foundation, outlined challenges and opportunities that led to the need for enhanced capacity of the college.

“Our community needed the ability to train more nurses and workers for industries like United Solar Ovonic in Greenville, and the college needed the resources and facilities to meet these needs,” Kohn said.

Kohn announced a $2.5-million capital campaign to provide a portion of the funding for new and renovated facilities and updated programs.  The state capital outlay process awarded MCC $3 million and $3 million is planned from the college’s operating budget toward the $8.5-million project.

MCC Director of Institutional Advancement Terry Smith said the college has raised more than $1.8 million in its Developing a 21st-Century Community capital campaign.

Ground was broken for the Stanley P. Ash Building in June 2006 and the new building and renovated Instruction East Building, Instruction North Building and Barn Theater were ready for MCC’s fall 2007 semester.

The 21,700-square-foot Stanley P. Ash Building is a “green” addition to the college’s Sidney campus. The building will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified for being environmentally friendly. Features include extensive use of daylight, increased ventilation, outdoor air delivery monitoring, lighting controls, water efficient landscaping, reduced water usage, reduced electrical usage, and recycling of construction water.  A kiosk near the entrance will display real-time energy use statistics.

The new building includes biology and chemistry laboratories, state-of-the-art nursing classrooms, two lecture auditoriums with seating for 72 and 56, group study areas and faculty offices.

Classrooms were renovated and a ceramics studio, painting studio, photography lab and exhibit space were added to the college’s Instruction North Building.  Renovations in the Barn Theater, MCC’s performing arts facility, provided new, more comfortable seating, wider, lighted aisles and a sprinkler system.

“The new Stanley P. Ash Building is crucial as the need for health care workers expands and the level of sophistication in their training increases,” said MCC President Donald Burns. “The art and theater spaces will allow us to provide enhanced opportunities for community enrichment. These facilities will help the college meet our community’s educational needs.”
