MCC exhibit features local artists

The work of local artists brings Montcalm Community College to life during a month-long art display.

“Picture This” features a collection of paintings and drawings by local artists including Debbie Bell, Laurie Lehman, Claudia Nielsen, Ed Pusick and more. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from Sept. 1 through 30 in the Instruction North Building on MCC’s Sidney campus.

Pusick’s shipwreck art has graced covers of books and was twice used to dramatize shipwreck documentaries on The History Channel. Pusick is known as “The Master of Disaster” for his chilling illustrations of sinking vessels. With few exceptions, Pusick’s works depict men on the brink of death.

His rendition of “The Edmund Fitzgerald in Storm” shows the 729-foot freighter being battered by 30-foot seas, just before its plunge to the bottom of Lake Superior on the night of Nov. 10, 1975.

“We have three of Ed Pusick’s original pieces on display as well as several rare, limited-edition prints,” said MCC Dean of Arts and Sciences Gary Hauck. In addition, many of Pusick’s tools, his drafting table, doodles and pencil drawings are included.

MCC Visual Arts Coordinator Carolyn Johnson is excited to share this exhibit with the public.

“We have so many talented artists in this area.  It is such an honor to be able to showcase this group in such a beautiful renovated gallery space,” Johnson said.
