Experience the sculptures on display at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park during a Nov. 12 presentation at Montcalm Community College.
Joseph Becherer, curator of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, presents “Sculpture City: Emergence of a Cultural Capital,” from noon to 1 p.m. in rooms D303-305 in MCC’s Beatrice E. Doser Building. Lunch is provided for students with a current MCC ID and is $2 for all others. Admission is free.
Gary Hauck, MCC Dean of Art and Sciences and the event organizer, said Becherer’s talk focuses on the “amazing works of art” at the sculpture park and the impacts these pieces have had on West Michigan. The presentation includes a slide show featuring the sculptures on display at the park.
Becherer began his career as a sculpture artist at The Ohio State University where he completed his undergraduate and master’s work. He earned his doctorate at Indiana University.
He has authored several books and articles, and he has curated numerous exhibits on the Modern and Contemporary Renaissance and Baroque periods. Recently, Becherer organized exhibitions of Andy Goldsworthy, Mark di Suvero, Henry Moore and George Segal, and he is presently working on exhibitions with Jaume Plensa and Jonathan Borofsky.
The event is sponsored by MCC’s Culture and Travel Club. Visit www.montcalm.edu for more information or contact Hauck at garyh@montcalm.edu or 989-328-1234.
