Learn “How to Understand and Appreciate Music,” with Grand Rapids Symphony Conductor David Lockington on Nov. 17 at Montcalm Community College.
Lockington offers a lecture to students, faculty, staff and community members from noon to 1 p.m. in rooms D303-305 in MCC’s Beatrice E. Doser Building. Lunch is provided for students with a current MCC ID and is $2 for all others.
Gary Hauck, MCC Dean of Arts and Sciences and the event organizer, said Lockington’s presentation focuses on classical music and “how we can relate to it as well as enjoy it.”
Lockington began his career as principal cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Soon after completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Cambridge, he came to the United States on a scholarship to Yale University. The 2009-2010 season commemorates Lockington’s 11th season as music director with the Grand Rapids Symphony. The New York Times has recognized the orchestra for being a “model in the classical music world.” The Symphony earned a 2007 Grammy Award nomination and has recorded four CD’s under Lockington’s direction. He and his wife, Dylana Jenson, reside in Grand Rapids and have four children.
The event is sponsored by MCC’s Culture and Travel Club. Visit www.montcalm.edu for more information or contact Hauck at garyh@montcalm.edu or 989-328-1234.
