Experience “Living Art” and an original African art display during Montcalm Community College’s annual art exhibit and sale Dec. 5-7 in the Instruction North Building Art Gallery on the college’s Sidney campus.
The event is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 5-6 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 7. It features a studio open house, art demonstrations and an artwork sale. Work from MCC’s credit and noncredit art students and art club members is featured, as well as pieces from members of the Montcalm Area Art Association and community members.
In addition, an exhibit featuring works by artists from Namibia, Africa, is on loan to MCC from Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, and is open for viewing during the “Living Art” exhibit and sale. MCC Dean of Arts & Sciences Gary Hauck said the one-of-a-kind display features authentic African artistry.
“This particular artwork graphically portrays the spirit of Africa, and the reverence and homage the Namibian people have for those who have preceded them in death. It skillfully combines the media of photography, drawing and painting along with special effects,” Hauck said. “The display also includes brilliant woodcuts that are typical of this region of Africa.”
MCC Visual Arts Coordinator Carolyn Johnson invites everyone to enjoy the event.
“Art is a tasteful and welcome gift for the holidays,” Johnson said. “We are very fortunate to have so many talented artists whose work we may visually enjoy as well as purchase at a very reasonable cost.”
MCC Art Instructor Debbie Bell is excited to share original artwork with the public.
“We have really talented students who have done fine artwork,” Bell said. “The assignments have been challenging and the students have met these challenges with interesting and creative solutions. I hope everyone will come and see the art that is being created at MCC.”
The event is in MCC’s Instruction North Building, which features a spacious gallery as well as modern instructional facilities.
